The yellow-bellied marmot is one of Montana’s most visible alpine mammals. Hikers will note the marmot’s high-pitched chirps and whistles while exploring rocky hillsides and boulder fields.

The yellow-bellied marmot has reddish brown fur, a yellow underside and dark brown head with red or brown feet. The species has a bushy, reddish brown tail. They are approximately 24 inches long and 7 inches tall.

Yellow-bellied marmots breed in May and typically give birth to 4-5 young. Adults are frequently seen perched on boulders above their burrows.
