Hairpin Lace Poncho ~ Free Crochet Pattern

This Hairpin Lace Poncho Free Crochet Pattern creates a stunning accessory you need in your closet! It’s the perfect layering piece for either cool or warm weather, or even as a swimming suit cover.

I’m not going to lie, I love to create strips of hairpin lace as I binge watch Netflix… or when my husband wants to watch a movie at night. This is the perfect task to keep my hands busy without much thought. Trust me, if you can single crochet while spinning a loom after each stitch, you got this!

Hairpin Lace Poncho Free Crochet Pattern

• This pattern can be made with different widths of hairpin lace strips than mentioned with a slightly different look. This will also result in different yardage amounts needed for project.
• Gauge: 14 sc = 4” (height not relevant)
• This pattern comes in one size, which fits most. 14″ length without fringe
• For a more loose neckline, work the following in Step 1: *sc in the 2 loops, sc 2 loops together* – 72 sts

Materials:

• Yarn: 3 Skeins Lion Brand Heartland Yarn or similar yarn
• Hook: Size H, 5.0mm
• Hairpin Lace Loom, one that allows for 6” hairpin lace strips (Chetnanigans Hairpin Lace Loom FA was used for this pattern)
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle
• Measuring Tape

Specialty Stitching:

   Hairpin Lace Basic Join:

1) Lay strips side by side.
2) Working in loops on left strip, insert hook into first indicated number of loops.
3) Working in loops on right strip, insert hook into indicated number of loops and draw through left strip’s loops on hook.
4) Insert hook into next indicated number of loops on left strip and pull previous loops through.
5) Insert hook into next indicated number of loops of right strip and pull previous loops through.
Repeat 4 and 5 until end. Secure by finishing off with a tail of closest strip.

Hairpin Lace Basic Finishing Edge:

1) Insert hook into the indicated number of loops.
2) Draw second indicated number through first indicated number of loops.
3) Insert hook into next indicated number of loops and draw through.
Repeat 3 until indicated. Secure by finishing off with a tail of closest strip.

Create the following strips

Strip 1: 6″ strip of 96 loops on each side

Strips 2: 6″ strip of 192 loops on each side

Strips 3: 6″ strip of 384 loops on each side

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: (Neckline) Join yarn in first loop on one side of the strip of 96 loops, ch 1, sc in same loop, sc 2 loops together, *sc in next loop, sc 2 loops together, repeat * across – 64 sc

Finish off

Step 2: (Basic Join) Join the unworked loops of the 96 loops with one side of the 192 loop strip using 1 loop from the 96 strip and 2 loops from the 192 strip

Finish off using a tail from beginning/end of strip

Step 3: (Basic Join) Join the unworked loops of the 192 loops with one side of the 384 loop strip using 1 loop from the 192 strip and 2 loops from the 384 strip

Finish off using a tail from beginning/end of strip

Step 4: (Finishing Edge) With the unworked loops of the 384 strip, sc 2 loops together around entire bottom edge

Finish off using a tail from beginning/end of strip. Weave in all ends. Sew or join with a sc each beginning strip with the end of the same strip to close the poncho.

Optional: Add fringe to bottom edge or leave raw. Pictures shows 3 – 20” fringe cut added between each two loops on bottom. Cut 576 total to do the same. Find a tutorial how to add fringe here.
